On the weekend of the 20 and 21 September, 32 of our Year 10 students completed their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Expedition.
The students faced an unexpectedly challenging weekend, completing two walks of a combined 12 miles whilst carrying all the kit required for a weekend of camping. As if that wasn’t enough, we had the surprise change in forecast to indicate winds of up to 45 miles per hour were now expected until 3am, leading to a not very restful night spent in the school hall and gym.
Despite the challenges they faced the students acquitted themselves brilliantly and were a huge credit to our school and community.
Since the beginning of the award in January the students have really embraced the spirit of ‘Youth Without Limits’ by learning to play musical instruments, cook, supporting local events and charities and many, many other activities. They have been a real inspiration, and we look forward to inviting our year 9 students to join the next cohort in the near future.
We have been incredibly fortunate as a school for the support given by the Duke of Edinburgh charity, who have provided funding for equipment as well as offering us two years of reduced costs towards licensing fees and participation fees. Without this support we would not have been able to establish this award at the school for this and future years.
In recognition of the support we have received from the Duke of Edinburgh charity Mr Sims will be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise funds for them on Sunday 12 October.
Any donations would be gratefully received and will help them to continue their work in providing opportunities for young people across the country:
